As Californians, we’re lucky to have Maui, one of the most sought-after island destinations, just a short plane ride away. Maui is special for so many reasons, from its iconic laid-back island lifestyle, to its sprawling surf, to its lush peaks—so it was only a matter of time until we decided we had to share in this little slice of island heaven. When we partnered with the classic Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, we knew it would allow our Bay Club community to visit a truly special place. We gathered our top five favorite Maui adventures, in case you needed any more enticement (though you probably didn’t), to experience this gorgeous place for yourself. (Plus, find out how to win a trip to the Aloha State for yourself below!)
Take the Road to Hana
A famed activity on the island, this will be a road trip of a lifetime. The 64+ miles of winding road offer scenic views of the water, the countryside, the mountains, and just about everything else that Maui has to offer. You can stop at one of the many roadside markets to grab some snacks for the road, or for a picnic pit-stop at famous Pa’iloa Beach, “Black Sand Beach.” Along the way you’ll find trail markers for hikes that will lead you to waterfalls and jungle-like terrain, like Twin Falls. The town of Hana is a sleepy village, so don’t plan on eating dinner there before the long drive back—everything will be closed at 5:00 pm! You’re on island time, after all.
Experience a Traditional Luau at Grand Wailea Resort
Hawaiian culture has a proud reverence for history and heritage. Did you know many public schools in Hawaii require young students to take a Hawaiian language class? While we can’t tell you how to become fluent in Hawaiian, we can suggest how to experience a truly authentic piece of Hawaiian culture: A luau at The Grand Wailea Resort. The entire experience is regarded as a magical way of learning about Hawaiian gods, watching the sacred ceremony of luau, and, of course, watching Hawaiians hula dance to the traditional music of their ancestors.
Snorkel and Swim at Molokini Crater
The largest volcanic crater off of Maui’s shore, the Molokini Crater rises 300 feet from the ocean floor. It’s a snorkeler’s dream destination, featuring marine and coral reef life that’s world-renowned. You can book a boat tour (most leave early in the morning to avoid choppy afternoon seas), and spend a day exploring the sea life and unique beauty surrounding the crater. Most charters will also offer a food and beverage option, or pick up a cooler of your own before you set out to sea.
Watch the Sunrise from Above the Clouds at Mount Haleakala
Part of Haleakala National Park, Mount Haleakala rises more than 10,000 feet above sea level. The road to the top is windy, subject to inclement weather, and still totally worth it. After driving the 50+mile ascent to the summit, you’ll rest above the clouds and enjoy a sunrise that even locals never tire of. Bring a big pot of coffee, some traditional Hawaiian pastries and fruit, and treat yourself to breakfast with a side of sunrise.
Take to the Waves in a Traditional Hawaiian Canoe
Surfing usually gets all the glory when it comes to Hawaiian water sports. But for most of Polynesian history, people explored the water and islands by outriggers. The Grand Wailea offers 6-seat traditional Hawaiian canoes for you and your family to experience Hawaii the traditional way. Your guided outrigger tour will also teach you out about the Polynesian voyages, and how they learned to navigate the sea by the stars. Chances are you’ll also see some sea life while onboard!
No matter if you’re an adventure seeker, an active family, or simply a big fan of pool and cocktail time, the Grand Wailea is an ideal setting for all vacation styles. Explore the endless amenities and activities on the resort property, or recruit their expert guidance in planning adventures offsite. And as a Bay Club member, you experience it all—for just a little less. As part of our destination property partnership, you’ll receive exclusive Bay Club perks, like discounted accommodations and services.
