You’ve never met anyone as fiercely passionate about fitness as Breann Mitchell. She does it all—kickboxing, dance, HIIT training, functional flexibility, strength training, and Mat Pilates. And she still has time to go for a leisurely cruise on her bike down the boardwalk, and perhaps indulge in some frozen yogurt. You may recognize Breann from Bay Club San Francisco, where she worked for four and a half years in various roles, including Specialty Programs Director and Membership Director, and we’re excited to welcome her back to the Bay Club family. Get to know our new Regional Fitness Programming Director in Los Angeles below, but before you do, scroll down and hit play on her Spotify playlist, full of her favorite songs!
Where are you from?
Sunny San Diego!
Where do you currently reside?
(Laughing) Sunny Santa Monica!
What made you want to pursue a career in fitness?
I have always been drawn to fitness and movement—I come from a very fitness-minded family. I grew up playing sports, dancing, and working out. When I wasn’t playing soccer, softball or at a dance class, you could find me working out at home. I would often run, do workout videos in the living room, or work out with my Dad. My Dad, being a coach, would encourage me to do push-ups, wall sits and try to beat my last mile time around our neighborhood. Once I discovered group exercise in high school and began teaching in college, I knew I had found my passion. I studied Kinesiology at SDSU and never looked back. They say if you do something you are passionate about, you never work a day in your life. I was lucky to find that early on.
How long have you been in the fitness industry?
What’s your favorite way to exercise?
I love to move to music. If there’s a good beat, I can do cardio for days. With all the various formats I teach, music is a huge piece. I believe it helps drive you to push harder and work longer. I am also a huge fan of weight lifting. When I am not teaching classes, you can find me on the weight floor trying to lift as much weight as possible (laughing).
What’s something you’re most proud of?
My ability to maintain a positive attitude. Attitude is everything—and it’s a choice.
Who is your mentor?
Chalene Johnson. Chalene certified me to teach Turbo Kickboxing back in 2002 (which I have still taught for the past 13 years). I learned a lot from this particular certification and she helped shape the type of instructor I am today. I have met her a few times over the years and have gotten to thank her for the role she played in my development as a fitness professional.
What’s your all-time favorite song to workout to?
My current favorite to workout to is “Summer Thing” by Afrojack, featuring Pitbull and Mike Taylor. But I love so many songs—make sure to check out my Spotify playlist for my top 20 (see right sidebar).
To dance to?
Same as above. (Laughing) I’m currently obsessed!
What do you have for breakfast everyday?
I have a two-scoop protein shake and half a cup of oatmeal. Those that know me know I prepare all my meals daily to tote around in my lunch box. Good nutrition is very important to me.
What’s your go-to indulgence?
That’s it? Any toppings?
(Laughing) You got me! Oreo cookies.
What do you do to unwind?
Now that I live closer to the beach, I love to take out my beach cruiser and ride along the coast.
What do you love?
I love teaching and presenting! When I am teaching a class or session and sharing the energy with others in the room, I feel that I am living my true purpose and there is nowhere else I’d rather be.
What inspires you?
Every day we wake up, we have an opportunity to grow, be more, work towards a goal, and accomplish our dreams. The fact that the opportunities are limitless is what motivates me and ultimately allows me to motivate others to reach their full potential.
“If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”
