4 Ways Companies are Moving in a Healthy Direction

If you’ve ever seen the popular comedy “Office Space,” you probably laughed at (and maybe related to) comical office scenarios of everyday cubical ennui, quirky coworkers, or a looming boss that drops in at the most undesirable times. While some of the themes in “Office Space” seem to sadly be timeless, many things have changed—for the better! Thanks to informal startup culture, unconventional corporate structures, and a general interest in investing in happy, healthy employees, office environments certainly aren’t what they once were.

One of the most pronounced ways that the working world has changed is the emphasis on health in and outside the office. In general, healthy employees are happier employees.

Here are just a few ways that companies are moving in a healthy direction.

1. So long, junk food. Hello, healthy snacks. Many organizations are booting those old, candy-laden vending machines and opting for healthier snack options. Here in the Bay Area, we’re lucky enough to also have quick and easy access to grocery delivery, making it possible for companies to simply order healthy snacks each week, and get them delivered straight to the office.

2. Get up, stand up. Employees who work primarily at a desk have (literally) elevated their roles by replacing chairs with oversized balance balls and standing desks. The truly fitness-committed are even using walking desks, checking emails and sending memos while racking up their steps.

3. Fitness forward. As part of the growing effort to invest in employees’ health and well-being, corporate health club memberships are also becoming more common. Whether their employer gives them a monthly stipend to spend on a gym membership, or their organization joins a local health club that all employees can use, many employees now have access to work-supported and work-incentivized fitness.

4. Friendly coworker competition. Forget competition in the office—today’s office environments are focused on creating collaborative, inclusive teams rather than cut-throat competitors. And one of the best ways to channel competitive energy in a healthy way is by taking it out of the office and onto the field…or court…or course. Playing in company leagues is a perfect way to stay fit with your colleagues, while also infusing some friendly, healthy competition into work relationships.
